Night People

Some people don’t like the glare of the sun. They become active when the moon is out. They seek the cover of darkness or the thrill of twilight. Other people stay up at night searching for answers to their troubles. Bad decisions or unfortunate circumstances have backed them into a corner. Other people burn the midnight oil, pondering age-old questions about man’s place in this world. They could be people near their death. Yet other people cannot sleep at night because night brings out the strong emotions in their hearts. They worry more, hate more, love more. They feel loss more keenly, sorrow more deeply, thoughts of revenge sweeter at night than in the daytime. All these people have one thing in common: night and the starry heavens above have great power on them. It stirs their emotions and quickens their heartbeat.

The Night People in these paintings are people who can't sleep because they are in love, who stay up late at night because a friend has died, who weep in the early hours of the morning because their life's dream has been crushed. They are also people who cannot resist temptation, who like to walk on the edge, who know in their hearts they shouldn't do something but do it anyway.

Twelve Ponies﻿
Twelve ponies
Named after stars
Were heading north.
Several hours earlier,
They had escaped
Through a broken gate.

The sun broke through,
Creating an arc of colors
Against the dark clouds.
But the rain was still
Pouring in the path
Of the galloping ponies.

The arc grew brighter,
One end reaching
Over the mountain peaks,
The other bowing down
Toward the moist earth
And the steaming ponies.

One by one, they stepped
Onto the rainbow bridge,
Climbed up to the top,
And disappeared
Behind the mountains.
